I’m waiting on an email back from the FoB organizer to see exactly how many qualifying spots we have.  Right now it’s just 2, and those two people are Max Hill and Andrew Fenner.  For more information on the Feast of Blades event in November, go to http://www.feastofblades.com/

Results, Doubles Tournament, 17 Jul

It wasn’t the most organized tournament I’ve ever run, but it sounds like people had a good time, and had some really close games.  Thank you to all who attended!

I did get feedback on Sunday regarding how to improve the Doubles format, and the tournament in general, but if there’s further comments please post them here or on Meetup.

To the final results:

Players Codices Battle Points
Chris/Bryan Black Templars/Blood Angels 45
Egan/Andrew Space Wolves/Tau 39
Brett/Sean Dark Angels/Grey Knights 36
Rod/Vince Marines/Thousand Suns 34
Kevin/Harrison Marines/Space Wolves 34
Todd/Brian Imperial Guard/Blood Angels 33
Hank/Filemon Relictors/Grey Knights 30
Andrew/Andrew Marines/Imperial Guard 12

In total, $150 of GW prize support were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as $80 to the tie for 4th.  Next time, I think there might be an automatic award to a non-power armored team!

Feast of Blades

So Gruebot asked about this awhile ago and I have some news.

The organizer of Feast of Blades has contact us here in New Mexico about becoming a part of this event.

The qualifier tournament would take place here in ABQ on July 23rd with the FoB event being held in Denver on Nov 4-6.  The main focus is an invitational tournament.  Each involved store can send their 1st and 2nd players (or alts) from the qualifier tournament.

To call FoB a ‘tournament’ isn’t quite right.  To be honest, from what Chandler the TO talked about, this sounds like a 40k festival.  Think gaming convention but with a focus on 40k (and I think Fantasy, but maybe not at the same time?).  Alongside the Invitational will be an Open GT that anyone is allowed to play in.  This came about from earlier this year where 50 non-invited players were at the Invitational just to watch.  Also, think of 40k event imaginable and they’ll have it.  Apoc games, Arena battles with special characters, painting comps, fluff games, you name it.  There will also be countless prizes for anything from winning a game with less than 13 models on the table to playing 40k for 15 hours straight and winning an actual purity seal (the beginnings of which you can see on the FoB blog).  Like I said, think convention or festival.

The couple of events I’ve been to in Colorado have been really well run with great players.  The 40k community up there is solid.  I think Gruebot would say the same.

I think this is going to be a fun event and I for one will be attending no matter what.  So, as a 40k community, are we interested?

Results, NOVA Tourney Feb 27th

Thanks everyone for a great tournament!  I hope everyone had a great time.  Despite itching to roll some dice, I really enjoyed being TO and look forward to next time.

The big improvement for next time will be more space between tables!  It was a little tight for tables 1-5, but I appreciate everyone’s patience.  Also, note that all entry fees went toward prizes.  Next time I’ll have gift cards ready to go starting game one for exceptional or lucky achievements throughout the tournament.

Regarding painting scores.  Since there was only 1 fully painted army and a handful of mostly painted armies, the painting scores were generally as such with 40pts being the maximum:
10pts for having an army
20pts for having an army with no proxies
30pts for having a fully painted (ie 3 colors and basing) army
Those are the baselines scores and then from there points will be added based on how well the army is painted, and how much of the army is painted.  I’m open to suggestions, but I think this is the best way to approach painting scores until more painted armies are fielded.

I think the scoring system worked in general, but will be evaluating that as well.

Again, thanks for the great turnout and see you in two months!  And get painting!

40k Campaign at Ares Wargames

Ares Wargames will be restarting the campaign that began in January.  The start date, as far as I know right now, is March 6th.

A few rules will change, to include what Critical Locations actually do, and what the campaign victory conditions will be.  Unless other changes are suggested, the rules will remain the same so here’s linkage to them:

Campaign Rules

Campaign Rules Addendum

Veteran Skills Chart

As a bonus to those who participated in the first go-round, you will be able to carry over Veteran skills to the new campaign.  If you have resource points remaining I suggest you remember to spend them before we get going and that data is lost.

As always, if you have questions post a comment here, email me, or head over to the Ares Wargames forums.

Update, NOVA Tourney Feb 27th

Things are looking good for Sunday!  As of today there are about 10 people pre-registered with others I know will be attending.  I look forward to seeing everybody there.

To answer a few questions:

  • Special Characters are allowed.
  • Painting is not required to play.
  • A reasonable number of proxies is allowed.

The missions will be as follows:

  • Game One:  Dawn of War with Seek and Destroy, Dominate Territory, and Vital Locations as the Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary goals.
  • Game Two:  Pitched Battle with Vital Location, Seek and Destroy, and Dominate Territory.
  • Game Three:  Spearhead with Dominate Territory, Vital Locations, and Seek and Destroy.

If you have any questions, post a comment here or email me at bigduncm24@gmail.com.

Also, I have added an email subscription option to the right toolbar.  Use it to keep updated on future events!

NOVA Formatted Tournament, Feb 27

My name is Chris Duncan, I’m the TO for this tournament.  Here’s some more info regarding this event:

This tournament will be held on Sunday, February 27th at Active Imagination’s new location.  Doors open at 11am and first round deployment starts promptly at Noon!

Pre-register! That can be done at Active Imagination or by emailing me at bigduncm24@gmail.com.  Pre-registration is not mandatory, but will save you $5.  If you wish to play on game day and haven’t pre-registered, the entry fee will be $10.  All fees will be collected at the door on game day.

This tournament is set at 1850pts using Standard GW Rulebooks, Codices, FAQs and Errata.  Forgeworld and Imperial Armor rules are not authorized.

You must bring 4 copies of your army list (one for the TO and one for each opponent).  Failure to do so will result in a lowered Sportsmanship score.

Expect to play 3 timed rounds.  The deployment phase is allotted 15mins and the game itself is allotted 2:15+turn finish.

There are two categories for winning with each category having a First and Second Prize.  The first category is Best General and is determined purely by tabletop performance.  The second category is Best Overall and is determined by weighted averages of tabletop performance, army painting and presentation, and sportsmanship.  Precise scoring formulas have not been finalized but will be released before game day.  Check back soon.

This tournament uses NOVA format missions.  The following is an overview of the NOVA mission format:

Primary / Secondary / Tertiary Goals

  • The entire tournament contains three Goals.
  • These Goals are in-play in every round.
  • For each round, one Goal will be Primary, one Goal will be Secondary, and one Goal will be Tertiary.
  • The Primary Goal for a mission is the Win Condition.
  • The Secondary Goal for a mission is the 1st tiebreaker.
  • The Tertiary Goal for a mission is the 2nd tiebreaker.
  • If required, simple Victory Points represent the fourth and final tiebreaker.

Game Length

  • All games go at least 6 turns, or until time runs out.
  • At the end of game turn 6, roll a d6: on a 1-3, the game ends; on a 4-6, play a full 7th turn.
  • Do not begin a new game turn of any kind if there are less than 20 minutes remaining in the round; if you begin a new game turn in spite of this, keep in mind that time may be called without both participants getting the chance to complete their player turn.
  • We will announce time periodically.
  • When the game does end, use the Winner Determination description below.

Winner Determination

  • When the game ends, perform the following:
  • Check the status of the Primary Goal; if one person is winning it, that person wins the game; if it is a tie at the end of the game, then …
  • Check the status of the Secondary Goal; if one person is winning it, that person wins the game; if it is a tie at the end of the game, then…
  • Check the status of the Tertiary Goal; if one person is winning it, that person wins the game; if it is a tie at the end of the game, then …
  • The winner is determined by a simple VP advantage (meaning you could win by 0.5VP).
  • READ SCORING REQUIREMENTS CAREFULLY

Scoring

  • At the end of the game, record your score for EACH Goal and fill the results in on the score sheet in this packet for the appropriate round!
  • If you do not record your score for any of the goals, you will be credited as scoring a “0” for it, and this will negatively influence your player rating, and could lead to your next round in the tournament being a tougher match-up than it should be!

Tabling Your Opponent

  • If you eliminate all of your opponent’s units prior to the end of the game, continue to play! When the actual game ends, tallying up the score at the end as if your opponent were still on the board.

Do NOT “Game” Ignorance!

  • If for any reason you are unsure of the way in which any of these Goals or the missions on the following pages are played, ASK A TOURNAMENT STAFF MEMBER NOW!
  • If you do not ask, and an argument arises post-game based upon ignorance of the rules, judges will rule based upon the end result visible on the table.
  • Judges will not rule based upon a possible result that “might” have happened if you read the rules more closely.
  • Check with your opponent to make sure he understands at the beginning of the game.

Seek and Destroy (Goal #1)

  • The purpose of this mission is to kill your opponent’s units.
  • Seek and Destroy uses the same basic rules as the Annihilation scenario in the GW rulebook (pg 91).
  • However, in order to win this goal you must ‘win by 3’.

Vital Locations (Goal #2)

  • Before any dice are rolled, place 4 objectives (40mm each) in every board corner, 18” from the closest short edge, and 12” from the closest long edge (4 objectives, each “centered” one of the board’s quarters).
  • Place a 5th objective (40mm) in the exact center of the board.
  • In order to hold an objective, a SCORING unit must be within 3” of its edge.
  • If an enemy unit is also within 3” of its edge, an objective is CONTESTED, and neither side controls it.
  • When determining if an objective is held or contested, ignore all terrain/model heights.
  • The opponent holding the most objectives at the end of the game wins this goal; if an equal number are held, this goal is tied.

Dominate Territory (Goal #3)

  • The purpose of this mission is to capture Table Quarters.
  • A quarter is captured when more of your victory points are in it than your opponent’s at the end of the game.
  • Units count for VP in the same way as Goal #1—damaged vehicles or units below half strength are only worth 50% of their VP.
  • If a unit is partially in multiple quarters, it is considered in whatever quarter contains a majority of the unit; if no quarter contains a
majority, randomly determine which quarter it is in.
  • The opponent controlling the largest number of table quarters at the end of the game wins this goal; if each opponent controls the same
number of table quarters, this goal is tied.

Fixed Objectives

  • Every table should have 5 objectives placed on it. Four should be centered in each table quarter, and one should be located at the center of the board. Ensure that they are in position before beginning the game, and contact a judge if you’re concerned that they are not located in the correct spots.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at bigduncm24@gmail.com and remember to check back later for specifics on scoring.  Get painting and see you on the 27th!
